here’s the final for that last illustration! it was included in a DreamWorks art show showcasing the work of several California State University art students. I was sooo lucky to be involved and offered critique from real Visual Development artists in the industry! Wish me luck out there…

Dear Tumblr, I’ve been busy this semester. In the best possible way. Currently, I’m enrolled in experimental animation, fabrications lab, and a special studies class. I have to tell you, my mind is being blown on a daily basis. In experimental, I get to play with puppets, paint, sand and charcoal to tell stories. It’s so trippy getting to use these different materials because when you’re limited to paper clay or tiny grains of sand to create a cast of characters, you get fabulously wonky actors and a wonderfully imaginative story. It’s great letting your freak side free.

Psh! then my fabrications lab! I’ve been taught how to use a MIG welder and an oxy-acetaline torch. Great times ensue. I’ve been so used to sitting at my desk painting quietly that it makes this heavy metal class extra exciting and challenging. I’ve been spending all semester cutting, grinding, and welding a 12 foot steel tree that I have yet to decorate. (OHHH THE GLITTER!!) Not gonna lie, I kind of feel like a badass. It’s pretty great. It’s kind of made me feel like I can make anything I want. ooooh child, I’m going to do just that!

then special studies. I’m currently illustrating a book about a little girl who goes on adventures with her mom in her car. Pretty typical Michelle story assignment right? BUUUUTTT taking experimental and fablab has totally changed the way I look at my illustrations. I’m completely stoked to explore new shapes and possibilities.

I’ll be posting more photos of my progress soon. I just had to let you know what’s up.

AND THEN! for the past two weeks i’ve been at an animation workshop in Monterey called CSU Summer Arts. i drove 640 miles both ways (about 12 hours), met 33 of the coolest young animators and 2 dreamworks artists, and animated 30 seconds of a 2minute performance i did with a mask. suffice it to say, i had a blast. it was about 50 degrees everday, we were awake and drawing from 9 am to 2 pm at least. in the end we had a couple all nighters, but it produced the most emotional piece i’ve ever done.

if you haven’t noticed, i prefer to draw cute little kids running around and bouncing -doing cute whimsical little kid things. but this project forced me to look deeper into a character, to look past the facade and animate her true self.

it’s funny because, after the animation showcase, we all kind of realized our animations reflected a bit of who we are. i am, by no means, an alcoholic, but i do struggle (as i’m sure every woman does) with self esteem and self worth. it wasn’t the funnest animation to draw (i got really tired of drawing a sad face! haha) but it was challenging and new and that was fun.

i hope you notice my growth. i would love to try another subtle piece to add to my reel.

so here’s everyone’s stuff! i hope you like it! i am so humbled to be amongst all of these great artists.

okay, this one is my end of the year reel. i left out my lip sync project,which, honestly, was nothing to write home about. if i find it, maybe i’ll post it later.

also with this, the first half is the rainy day video so you can skip past it if you’ve seen it already.

also also, the second half is suuuper rough. it’s painful actually. i was supposed to focus on 3 scenes and have the rest storyboarded, but alas, i got greedy :P

enough excuses. now watch!

So, can I just hurry up and be a lawyer already and you be the person who fills my house with awesome art? I miss yoooou!

here’s is the finished “rainy day” movie. i added a background and some extra in betweens (though not really enough…there’s never enough! gah!) this project really pushed me to take more time with my animations and put more heart into them to tell a story. after finishing this, i was super pumped to get started on some more. ANIMATION YEAH!

how i spent my winter break.

my mom loooves thomas kinkade (i know i know. she doesn’t get it) and has been asking me to paint her something to decorate her new apartment with. this is the result. even though i hate him, i now have a newfound respect for his art. cus daayyuuummnn, that ninja can paint!

everyone who knows me know i love flowers and beauty and special streams of sunlight peering through the clouds a la the lion king. but after 3 weeks of that and realizing i was doing a completely half-assed version of mr. kinkade’s made me realize that fool loves flowers and such heck of a lot more than i do. so cheers thomas. to your unending patience and love for flowers.
